Frequently asked questions
Do I need a photo on a German CV?
It is optional. A photo was long standard in Germany, but many applicants now leave it out, and employers cannot require one. If you include one, make it professional.
What is the difference between a Lebenslauf and a Europass CV?
A Lebenslauf is the German-style CV. Europass is an EU standard format. Many employers are happy with a clean, standard CV, so use Europass only if the employer asks for it.
How long should a German CV be?
One to two pages. One page is fine early in your career.
How should I write dates?
Dates are often written as month and year, for example 03/2021 to 08/2024.
Do I need to sign my CV?
Some employers still expect place, date and a signature on a printed CV. For online applications it is usually not necessary.
